RAUM exhibition set up

I helped a bit in the flyers, I helped to print the vinyl, it is being cut for the exhibition. The line for the wayfinding will be changed to orange. We removed the information and just keep dates. Instead of every 10 years, it will have every 100 years. Basically, the line will be made by using orange tape and the years will be made using vinyl.

Last development for my design

Due to the fact that someone said some of my pictograms look a bit confused. Therefore I drew it again.
I drew the pictograms of mobile and notes again with a better and clean design so that people can understand it easier.

I think it would be great if I can make it in different colours. Therefore, I made the same design in different colours.

last crit for studio brief

This was the last crit for the studio brief four, unfortunately because of the time, I couldn't get that much feedback, basically, people said my idea was funny because most of them felt sleepy as well during the COP lecture, they suggested me could think about objects relating to staying awake so I may put some energy drink into the box. Someone suggested me could placing the design (pictograms) on the coffee cup, I know it would be really interesting but just wondered if I can do screen printing on to a coffee cup or not because it isn't a paper so it would be very uncomfortable to print on it, also if I do spray painting on to it, it may be quite dangerous because it is a coffee cup so people may drink the ink as well (The spray ink is really easy to be removed). Moreover, some people said some of my pictograms look a bit unclear so I need to redraw them.

Module evaluation

This is the last module over the course and it has four studio brief in this module. Hence, I found really rush at the beginning because there were a lots of works to complete. I found the hardest studio brief for me was the first one which was the Penguin Random House Student Design Award. Due to the fact that I don't really like to design book covers so I found it was quite challenged to me as I didn't know the story of the book and I didn't have enough time to scan read the book. Therefore, it was really difficult to me. I learned the skill of screen printing since the second studio brief. It was really interesting. At the beginning, I was worried about the output because it was my first time to do screen printing and I kept forgetting the step of screen printing even I did the induction so I was quite nervous in that time. However, when I tried to do the first time, I understand and remember the step so I felt more confident to do that. As a result I was able to produce a standard quality of work. It made me felt more confident to do screen printing in my third studio brief. It was the first group project over the course and we have to work with people that we don't usually talked to so it made me scary because of the language barrier. Hence, I really want to overcome this problem as I decided to study in UK because I want to improve my English so that it helps my to work internationally. Actually, I have learned a lot of technique that I have never done before such as screen printing or spray painting. It helps me to improve myself to be a more professional graphic designer, however, I should start to read more books especially for research because I usually did my research on the website so it was usually digital information. However, I think I did quite good in the time management in this module because I kept myself complete some tasks or blogs on time so I have more time to develop more for my works. Therefore, I should keep myself like this in the future.

Studio brief 4 evaluation

In this project, we were asked to make a graphic work that makes a statement, comment, observation or gives advice about our experience on your first year of this course. As this is my first year studying in LCA so I found a lot of difficulties at the beginning such as the environment is totally different with my foundation course or the school in Hong Kong, also the structure of the lecture is different compare with my foundation course. Therefore, I have a lot of things wanted to give advice to the first year student. But the one I like the most was "Stay awake in COP lecture".  To be honest, I think it is the most boring lecture over the course as it mainly talked about art history or theory. Therefore, I usually couldn't be concentrate during the COP lecture. Hence, I wanted to tell the new student be aware with that. I quite like the theme of this project, it was quite interesting. However, because it is the last project of this module so we just have about two weeks to finish it which is quite rush. When I made my outcomes, I really enjoyed the process of spray painting because it was my first time to do that, I remembered that when I started to spray in a close distance to the thing that I wanted to paint on it painted with too many ink so I just painted again in a far distance and it worked much better. Therefore, I understood that we can't do the spray painting too close with the paper. Overall, I really enjoyed the project even I worked individual, I learned some skills which I don't always do such as spray painting, however, I think I should start to read more books such as some designer books to get inspiration from them, as a result, it helps me to get more ideas for my designs.

Final outcomes

I wanted to print them digital because there will be a lot of first year students so digital print would be much better.

Design development

At the first stage, I designed some pictograms according to the survey that I asked people what they usually did during the Cop lecture. Basically, most people usually slept or played with their mobile while the lecture. Hence, I wanted to make the advice by a simple design, mainly visualisation so that students won’t feel boring to read the advice. For example, it’s just suggesting students to wake up and back to uni early or be concentrate, etc. For the series of poster, I designed three set of poster in two different versions as I didn’t know which is the best, however, when I showed to some people in a crit, they suggested me to keep both version so I just leave with two versions for every set of posters. For the glasses, I just used the same pictogram that I used for the advice and then just sticked on the glasses so when the student really want to sleep but feel uncomfortable they should wear it so that it shows more respect to the lecturer. I found a pink box because the pink is the LCA logo’s colour which is really meaningful and I did the design with spray paint because I wanted to make some design on the box, as it is for Cop lecture so I cut the word “COP” from a card in helvetica. I worried if I use serif font with spray paint, it may looks very messy, therefore I just used a clean typeface to do the spray paint.

I want to do the spray painting because it looks really cool and attractive. Due to the fact that most students found Cop is a boring lecture so I wanted to make something to get their attraction so that I can give advice to them to stay awake in Cop lecture. To do this, spray painting is the greatest choice. I looked at some graffiti and I found that the pattern are usually not in order which mean can draw randomly.

I quite enjoyed the process of doing spray paint because it was fun and the outcome was really cool especially the effect of "O" and "P" look really attractive.

As I wasn't sure which one is better so I asked some people from the class and most of them asked me to keep both so that I can have two version for every single poster.

At the beginning, I designed some pictograms because I wanted to use in some of my poster so that students can read easily. Basically, I just wanted to keep the design simple so I just made those pictograms mainly in two colours or just black.

Initial ideas development

After the first crit, people agreed that the idea that asking student stay awake is the most interesting and effective so I decided to develop with it. I want to design a series of small poster (may be smaller than A5, it depends on the size of my box so that I can put the poster inside). For the glasses, I think I may just use some toy glasses and then print my pictogram of eyes and then stick on it, it would be really fun. Moreover, I want to design an advice just like the flight advice and then put under the chair in the lecture theatre so it helps to keep reminding students.

Survey for what people usually did during Cop lecture

I did a small survey and asked some people from my class asked them about their feeling about the Cop lecture and what would they do during the lecture most answers I have got were saying Cop is boring and they usually using mobile or sleep during the lecture, some people even said they were dreaming during the lecture. I also asked them how to stay awake, most people said drink a cup of coffee and listening to music helps them to stay awake.

COP lecture

Cop represents the module OUGD401 Context of practice. This module provides an introduction to the contextual and historical background of art, design and media, alongside considering relationships between theory and practice. Students enhance their contextual knowledge and understanding, together with their own critical awareness and develop the ability to situate their practice within a global context. Through seminars, lectures and tutorials, students investigate their own discipline and also the broader cultural and contextual frameworks that are influential to the fields of art, design and media.
Basically, students need to do critical writings in this module, unlike other modules, this module mainly focusing on theory so most students it may be quite boring during the lecture so most students usually sleep during the lecture. To be honest, I think it is the hardest module for me because I am an oversea student, English isn't my first language so during the lecture, I didn't understand all theory because of the language barrier. Therefore, I used my phone sometimes during the lecture, not focusing. Hence, it is an important thing for me that I should improve.

As you can see the environment of the lecture theatre is really dark so most students couldn't really concentrate during the lecture.

Module evaluation of OUGD404

Actually this module taught me a lot of graphic design techniques such as book binding, folding, etc. To be honest, I didn't know these kind of things before I started this module. The best thing in this module is to teach us many useful things in layout, type, colour and format which I didn't learnt in my foundation course. This module gave me an opportunity to enhance myself to become a stronger and more professional graphic designer. The greatest thing I have learned from this module is to make my layout/design simpler so that viewer can read it easily. As I thought it would be better if the layout is more decorated before I started this module so I always worked too complex in the layout, however, tutor showed many examples to me during the lecture and I found that most of their designs look really simple and even work better than a complex design so I started to limit myself to make my design simpler. I really like the output of those two booklets, as that were my first and second time to make a booklet so my skill was really good and I did again and again until the final publication. Even the outcome may not look perfect but I really enjoyed the process of making the booklet, during the task, I understood that it would be better to design in indesign as it works easier than illustrator or photoshop in this case. Moreover, it is better to design in landscape paper so that it can be fold easily and produce a booklet. Overall, this module taught me a lot of things which helps to improve myself to be a more professional graphic designer, what I should improve is try to read more books rather than just search on the internet because I am a lazy person to be honest and I hate reading book because of the language barrier (English isn't my first language and I have to translate) so I don't like reading the design book. Hence, I really want to tackle this problem, what I can do is try to read some theory books with more illustration so that it helps me to understand easier.

inspiration for my design

Basically, I want to make my design similar to the DIGIN welcome box, it is a welcome box in most of the student accommodations, basically, inside the box just have something saying "Welcome" to the student. Therefore, I want to make something similar to this which give a guide for the level 4 student about the Cop lecture. Probably I may make some postcards or small posters, stickers and a glasses with the fake eyes so that it can for those students who sleep during the Cop lecture and wearing it which look like their eyes are open.

This is the thing that I want to make with my glasses, it is really rude that sleeping in front of the lecturer, to show the respect, it would be better to wear the fake eyes glasses so that the lecturer may think your eyes are open.

Evaluation

In this project, it was my first time to work with western people as a group so I felt very nervous at the beginning as I am the only asian student in the class so I wondered if they could understand my english or not. Despite of the language barrier, most people helped me in the group so that I could do my best to help the group to produce a better quality of works. Therefore, I felt really happy with that. However, I think we were lack of communication between each other. To be honest, I just usually communicated with one or two people in the group so that is what I want to improve, talking to more people in the group even my part don’t really need to communicate with their part. But generally, this project gave me a chance to work with people that I didn’t always talk with so it enhanced my communication skill with others. The hardest thing I found over the project was to explain my ideas because english isn’t my first language so when I explained my ideas to others, I found it was really difficult, unlike the individual project, we don’t have to explain all our ideas to others but it was an really great opportunity for me to overcome this challenge.

Studio brief 4rationale

Basically, I want to tell the first year students stay awake and be concentrate during the Cop lecture at the lecture theatre even the environment in there is really dark and like a cinema but if people don't be concentrate, they may get loss with the Cop project which can affect their result. Therefore, I want to make something like the DIGIN Box which can give to students on the first day. It included some small poster that saying "DON'T SLEEP" in the Cop lecture. I want to give the box to the freshers when they have the first COP lecture in the lecture theatre.

Final crit of studio brief 2

I showed these screen printed poster in the final crit, people said the print successfully communicates my event, they really like the typeface that I designed for the "2017" which looks really modern and resembles the Chinese symbols. People said my idea was clear. However, some people suggested me that I could try to work in all Cantonese but I think it can only works in Hong Kong because the event happen in Leeds not Hong Kong so I am afraid if I work all in Cantonese, some people may not understand the aim of the poster. Most people prefer the first poster rather than the second poster, they said the messy style of poster work even better than the clean one so I just submitted the first poster as my final poster.

Initial ideas for studio brief4

-Stay awake during the Cop lecture in the lecture theatre even the environment is really dark
-You need to keep the blogs update every weeks, otherwise when the works building up, you won't have time to complete it.
-Make your mind easier which mean don't think the design too complex
-Speak to more western people that you don't know if you are asian so that you can improve your english.
-Sit in the first row in the classroom so that you can be more concentrate.

Final productions

I did the final invites with the traditional printing process which was screen printing in Ultramarine Blue. Moreover, we got an idea for the back of the invites, I thought it would be great if we printed
the back of the invites similar to the flyers or poster. Also, it looks more relevant.
