Examples to promote the message "Stop Discrimination"

I looked at different examples that trying to promote the message to general public, for example posters, illustrations, etc. I am thinking about if I can design something for university so that more students can understand the message as my target is students(trying to tell them the impacts of discrimination) so it would be better the promote it from the university. I understand that the best way to promote it from university is "FREE STUFF" because I know that students will go and take it if it is free, imagine during the induction week of the new academic year, many students were waiting to get the tote bag, and I thought it would be a good chance to promote the message at the same time, what I need to concern is the costs only.

How to deal with the discrimination

If we are discriminated by someone, we shouldn't give up, there is a lot of ways to deal with the problem.
  1: Love yourself
Knowing the negative views of the people about someone's race, gender or religion can prove hurtful for them. But it is not ideal to hate for themselves for them being who they are. Instead, they must look at the things that make them a lovable person.

2: Get the hang of yourself
When someone facing discrimination, they must make sure not to think much about what happened. It is a must for them to take care of themselves. Moreover, they should eat nutritious food and exercise regularly. It will help them to relieve the stress.

 3: Raise your voice
Taking action against the wrong is better than taking the unwanted stress from it. Victims should make their well-wishers aware of what happened. Next, they must think of the right way to get justice. It will help them to become a mature and thoughtful person.

4: Make plans and learn about the consequences before taking action
Due to the negative impact of discriminate, victims may make some decisions in a hurry. Such decisions can prove harmful for them. Thus, it is better for them to think of what they can do to teach a lesson to the culprits. They must ensure that any of their actions don’t cause problems for them in the future. It is also a must for them to consider whether their actions will hurt other people like them. Or how fruitful their efforts can prove to them and the people similar to them.

5: And reach the right people
If discrimination happened to someone, they can reach the people such as social activists, lawyers and other individuals who can help them. So that victims can find it easy to make the concerned people hear their voice.

Techniques to prevent discrimination

Discrimination can be prevent everyone respect to others no matter different colour of skin, language, culture, religion, etc.

1, Know your beliefs
Our beliefs play an important role in shaping our lives. It takes some people in the right direction.
2, Expand your view and challenge yourself
Some people keep living they way they are. They don’t bother to look at the world in a broad way to change their views. It leads them to discriminate or do some other unethical activities.
3, Ask and listen
Lots of people grow bias against someone or a community without knowing about them. Furthermore, they don’t seek knowledge about them. Asking questions and listening to the other people can help us to overcome negative thinking. To know a person or community better, we can ask them about their history. We can ask them why they do some particular things. Also, make sure not to indulge in a debate with the people.
4, Learn to share with everyone
For example, if someone have plans to celebrate. But, they have not invited some of their well-wishers due to their race or religion. It just spread the fire discrimination.
5, Take action against the wrong of the society
Lots of are people live with injustice in the modern times. They face injustice for their culture, race, religion and many other reasons. What we can do is to help such people to get justice. It may help us to change our views about certain people or culture.

What are the impacts of discrimination?

It is true that there are many impacts caused by discrimination. While, the major effect to victim is Emotional and physical impacts, no matter the victim is an adult or teenage, discrimination may still happen to them, hence, they may get injured, or things can go even worse if the harassment is too much. It may hurt their physique much. Also, the emotional or mental impact is even tougher to deal with. The victim may feel anxious, sad, guilty, empty or depressed.
Other than that, Social, educational and financial impacts are the second important impacts to victim, Harassment or discrimination may also hurt victim socially as well as financially. It may also affect to their educational life. As a victim, they may feel confused and broken. They may lose trust on the people. Hence, they may take drugs to runaway from what happened. It caused are serious situation.
These two are the main causes to a student who being discriminated. However, there are still many impacts to victim (general public).
-Effects of discrimination on society and businesses
-Impacts of discrimination on politics
-Effects of discrimination on the culprit

Places that usually occur discrimination

Even though discrimination may occur in everywhere from the world, however, there are some places that discrimination usually happened.

1:Workplace
Workplace is one of the common places where we may have to face discrimination. The effects of discrimination in the workplace are severe. For example, someone may not get a promotion at work due to the fact that having an association with a particular group.

2:Housing
Lots of people complain about the unfair behaviour of the landlords and housing officials. People may also face it if they live in a rented place. These people may come up with stupid reasons to help intolerable people live with them on the same floor or place. They may discriminate against someone due to their association with a different group. However, this may not happen to students normally.

3:Public places
The most serious place that discrimination usually take place. We may often hear the news of disrespectful treatment of the people by a group. It may happen in the public places such as market, hospitals, and sports facilities. People may direct wrong words to others, such as saying bad words to others. Moreover, they may avoid someone just because they are not same as them, e.g skin colour, religion, language, etc.

4:Politics/ Voting
In many countries, some group of people may not have the right to vote or may disenfranchise. Things may turn out this way because they belong to particular religion, society or culture. But again, it is not happening to a student.

5:Access to funds or credit
People often face discrimination when it comes to getting funds or credit. If they come from backward or low-income family, they may have to deal with the same.

6:Law or police
Law and police are also not behind when it comes to discriminating against the people. They may treat someone differently due to their religion or culture. They may also have a problem with their skin colour or dress often.

7:Travel or tourism
Moreover, some foreigner may not get a visa or may face harassment from the security officials at the airport. Or they may not treat to those foreigners in the right way. It always happen to foreigner students when they are travelling especially if there is an Asian student travel to Europe countries.

What are the factors influencing discrimination??

It is classified to two factors influencing to discrimination.

Prejudices: Some people form the opinions about some people or something without even knowing the real story. It leads them to treat people differently. For example, what will people think if the son of a footballer makes debut with a normal kid? They will think that footballer’s child will play better. It is prejudice.

Stereotypes: Stereotypes are the next level of prejudice. If people are a stereotype, they may have a distorted view about something. For example, sports are only for boys or pink is for girls. It is the influence of stereotype at an early age. It leads us to have strong ideas about things, people, and ideologies. As they age, their hate for particular things, people, cultures, beliefs, and languages get deeper. It leads them to discriminate or show bias.

What is discrimination?

It is true that anywhere in the world has many discrimination which caused a serious phenomena. We are all human. All of us eat and drink. We breathe in the same air and have feelings. Therefore, I really want to help to tackle this problem, especially being a foreigner studying in a foreign country will always face this problem to us. Due to the fact of different cultures, languages, beliefs, etc. There are different types of discrimination.

Two major discriminations:
- "Direct discrimination", basically, it is the common type of discrimination, in this case, a person may treat another person unfairly due to some specific protected characteristics. It may also happen because of some perceived characteristics. A person may discriminate if another person has an association with the people with that protected characteristics.

-"Indirect discrimination", it means Some laws and policies may not prove advantageous for the person. It may be unfair to someone legally just like laws or policies so people can't even judge it.

Few other discriminations:
- "Victimisation", as some people may face such times where people may discriminate against to them if they claim the discrimination. They also have to face the same if their support the claim of an individual. People may also discriminate against them if their intentions do not seem favourable for others. All of it comes under the victimisation type of discrimination.

- "Harassment", it is the type of discrimination that hurts victims both mentally and physicallyPeople may have to deal with the acts of offence, humiliation, and intimidation. People may do it with you due to your age, gender, race, religion or some disability. Rude gestures, written or spoken words and images or jokes are the ways people take to harass others.

- "Sexual harassment", basically it is same type with Harassment, however, this discrimination is sexualIt is the type of discrimination that may make a person lose self-esteem.

Example of discrimination happened in the UK

The South Korean, who wants to be known as Mr Kim, lives in Brighton and was walking down North Street at 22:30 BST on 15 October 2017 when an altercation began. Police were called to the allegedly racially motivated attack, and Mr Kim, 20, had to be taken to hospital for treatment. According to the news, there were three young white boy being sought by police. According to Mr. Kim's friend, Mr. Kim was left with serious injuries to his teeth. In that day, Mr. Kim's friend asked those white boy why they have thrown the bottle to him and they answered that 'Because you are fucking Asian'. It was a really serious discrimination and the news was shared by a lot of people in the internet during that time.

Pick my idea to go ahead for studio brief 2

I personally really like my first idea that doing discrimination happening in Leeds, due to the fact that it also happened to me in Leeds sometimes which made me very upset and I really want this issue be solved, it is really annoying. Hence, I did a mind-map to make a basic structure of my chosen issue.

So the middle is my topic issue "Discrimination in Leeds happening to Asian students, the reason for me to focus on Asian students is because I am Asian, most of my friends in Leeds are Asian so I can collect some primary research from them easily, also, as my tutor suggested me could focus on a minor group as talking about discrimination in Leeds is too huge so I decided to focus on a smaller group of students. As I known, there are many students from Japan, Korea, Hong Kong and China in Leeds, for Hong Kong, I can write some personal experience as a part of my research. I heard that some Asian students even faced discrimination in their university which is really horrible. Moreover, it is true that discrimination also happen to students out of university, for example, the shops in Leeds or the streets in Leeds, etc. It is quite different between Leeds and London, people in London are really really nice and kind to everyone, however, there are really few number of people discriminating to some overseas students.

initial ideas for studio brief 2

1. Discrimination in Leeds (focusing on Leeds university students who are Asian)- as I am a foreigner student(Asian) studying in Leeds
-Add some personal experience of discrimination
-interview to some other Asian students if they have some experiences before or not
-interview to some local students of how their feeling about discrimination and what they will do if they see someone being discriminate.

2. People in the UK usually don't wait for the traffic light when they crossing the road which is really dangerous, for this, I planned to focusing in Leeds as well as it is the easiest way to collect some primary research, e.g recording the real life of how people cross the road. Especially when students going to uni at the morning, they walked very quick may be because they woke up late? However, they didn't wait for the traffic light to green and just crossed the road even though many cars which is very dangerous.

3. There are many people in the UK spit on the road which is really rude and dirty. It is really different to Japan.

4. The amount of food waste are increasing which cause a lot of waste, for example in the market, restaurant, people usually don't finish their food even they have paid.

5 UK gender pay gap (Male usually get higher salary than female).
